A place bet is a type of horse racing wager in which the bettor selects a horse to finish either first or within a specified number of positions (e.g. first or second, first or third, etc.). If the horse finishes within the designated number of positions, the bettor wins. The payout is typically lower for a place bet compared to a win bet, but it is also a less risky wager as there is a greater chance of the bettor's selection finishing within the specified number of positions.
It is not possible to select which position the place bet applies to at the time of placing the bet. The wager is placed on the selected horse finishing in any one of the paying place positions. That could be first, second or third.
The amount paid for each paying place position can vary according to the odds applicable at the time of the race. The calculation used to generate the payout will be shown printed on the betting receipt.
